Finding the Romance

We had our first snow fall on Sunday morning! I woke up groggy and tired, as I usually do, and went to let the animals out. As I did, I saw the snowflakes falling and the thin (and I mean, very thin) layer of snow that was growing. So I sprinted upstairs to wake Brandon up and tell him that it was finally snowing! He knew something important must be happening because I usually don't run anywhere in the morning! It only lasted for a few hours but it was still exciting! And then we woke up to snow again this morning. I am hoping it sticks this time!

The snow got me thinking about the little mysteries and beauties in life that always make me stop. We all have those moments in life, moments when something more is calling to us. For each of us these may be different: in the snow-capped peaks of a beautiful mountain; in the vibrant colors of fall displayed on tree after tree or in the quiet morning hours with coffee and stillness; in the laughter of a friend or in the touch of a loved one; in the eyes of a child; in the sounds of a waterfall cascading down a mountain of rocks. Moments like these remind us of a beauty that we feel deep in our souls. I think we often lose this beauty amidst all that we must do. With all the "should's" and the "ought-to's" we tend to forget about the deep longing within us for more.

I think the only way that we find this yearning deep within us is by finding a passionate relationship with God. It has to be about more than obligation and rules and commands. There has to be something intimate. A romance. Without that, we lose touch with those little callings of beauty, we settle for less. And as I watch the snow fall while sitting by the Christmas tree cuddled up in blankets, I know that I don't want anything less.

Update

Hey everyone! Hope that you all are enjoying the Christmas season! This has always been my favorite time of year! We have two more weeks of school before Christmas break! It is going to be sad not being with any family for Christmas, but many people have already invited us over and I know we will have a good time! There is a big Christmas market in dowtown Budapest with all kinds of stands set up and lights everywhere. It is really pretty and a lot of fun to walk around there. We have already been twice and will probably go again! We wish you all could join us too!

Last Friday night, ICSB had a coffee house event to raise money for ovarian cancer research (the foundation is called "Teal Toes"). Many people came out to enjoy live music and coffee and treats. It was great to see how many people were there and to be able to fellowship with everyone! The highschool student council worked really hard to put everything together and they did a great job!

This Thursday is Brandon's and my last day to teach our English class to the local Hungarians. It has been a great experience and we have been able to get to know some great people!

Here are a couple pictures from what we have been up to! Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!

Birthday in Budapest!

Well well we meet again awesome people in a land far away! As you know It was my birthday just a few days ago, and it was a birthday to remember. First let me thank all of you who wished me a fantastic Friday! It was a great day which included a lot of firsts for me. Celebrating another year of life for the first time away from home and all our friends and family was a new experience which got me thinking. Birthdays and holidays are special events that are meant to be celebrated with close loved ones and familiar faces. You may expect a birthday in a foreign country with people you have only known a couple months to be a bit of a downer. But God has once again pleasantly surprised me with a pretty awesome birthday. Being in a school surrounded by hyper little rug rats that think you are a super hero might just be one of the best places to celebrate a birthday! Well if you are into being the center of attention and the whole day being devoted to you that is. As soon as I walked into the Elementary hall I was showered with happy birthday cards, gifts, and songs...In more than just english I might add. I don't think I have ever heard so many I love yous and happy birthdays in my life!
And after the school day was over God showed me again how blessed we are. He dropped us right into some really awesome friendships that feel like family already! The Slaughters, the McLemores, and of course Austin, all went out to dinner and bowling and really had a blast! Even though I missed all of you back home and wished you could all be here with us, its great to be in a place surrounded by people we love and that truly love us back!
Tomorrow is thanksgiving and I imagine it will turn out just like my birthday did. In great company, full of fellowship and laughter! We will miss you all back home and wish you all a happy thanksgiving!!!

We love you guys!

Volleyball and High School Girls

Well we are nearing the end of our volleyball season, and I have had such a great time coaching and getting to know these girls. They are each so unique and each have so much to bring to the world out there. I didn't expect to coach when I came here, but once we got here they asked if I would be willing to do it, and even though I was a little wary, I agreed. Now I am so glad that I did!

I have also had the opportunity to help out with the youth group from our church here (the youth group is all students from ICSB). We started a bi-monthly meeting with the girls in the youth group, and already we have seen that they have so many questions and desire to know so much. I feel so blessed to get to be a part of their lives and invest as much time as I can in them. I remember high school, some fond memories and some not so fond, and I know that it can be an exhilirating but also challenging time. I have heard a lot of sadness and pain, but also a lot of joy.

Those of you who know me well know that I am not a public speaker. I don't like it and I shake throughout it! :) But God has really been putting a burden on my heart to share MY high school testimony with these girls. I feel that I struggled with a lot in high school, and I want the girls to know that sometimes the things that "aren't talked about" actually NEED to be talked about. You can pray for me as I prepare what I want to say, and pray for the girls that they hear something they really needed to hear. Not because of what I say, but because of what God can do in their hearts.

They have really been such a joy for me to be around and I am looking forward to the next few months, as I grow alongside of them!

Thank you for your continued support and prayers! We miss you all!

Vienna

Well, we just got back from a quick two-day trip to Vienna! It was beautiful, and thankfully, it wasn't too cold! (I am from southern CA....I need a break every now and then!) It is an amazing city! We went with two of our good friends here, Andy and Angela Slaughter.

One thing that I was worried about when we moved was if we were going to connect with anyone. Would we find people who we had things in common with? People we could build relationships with? Because of the close knit community that you fall into when you move to a school of fellow missionaries, we found that we were quickly welcomed into the lives of everyone here. We have experienced nothing short of immense graciousness and hospitality! And God has provided us with dear friends already. He knew what we needed when we came here, and he was ready for us, as he always is. So thank you God, for good friends, old and new! And thank you for the beautiful cities and country sides that you created that we are able to enjoy!!

A Little Reminder...

Hey Everybody!

I just wanted to share a quick story with all of you that really caught my attention and softened my heart even more for what we are doing here.

Last week after school Melissa was talking to a parent in the lobby while she waited for her son Luke, who is a first grader to come bounding out of his classroom, down the stairs and through the hallway to head home for the weekend. While they were talking Luke's mom shared a story with Mel about something that had happend at home the night before. As Luke and his parents were getting ready for dinner they all sat down and Luke's dad began to pray. Right as he was about to say Amen, Luke jumped in mid sentence with a prayer of his own. He prayed "Thank you God for Mr. Wilcox, he is the best P.E. teacher in the world." (He is a first grader so I'm also the only P.E. teacher he has ever had HAHA) When I heard this story later that day I was blown
away! It's always great to know about and a huge blessing to have people pray for you, but when it comes from a kid in first grade who finds it important enough to interupt dad to sqeeze in a thank you to God, it really makes you stop and think.

It's stories like this one that have been happening so regularly here in Hungary that it's really beginning to be clear that God placed us here for a specific reason. It really is an amazing experience to see the impact we can all make on peoples lives whether that be here in Hungary or back home in the states. I just want to thank all of you back home who are supporting us and making this possible! Each and every one of you are a blessings to the kids and families here, and I wish you could all come and see what it is you are doing in their lives, because once you see it, you will be hooked on Hungary!

We love and miss you all!

8th Grade Outreach Weekend

We spent this last weekend working at a temporary housing facility for families without homes. The facility was an old Soviet barracks/compound, which was really neat to see. The outreach was with our 19 8th graders and 6 of us teachers (Brandon and I included). We spent all day Friday doing yard work for them...clearing out the huge lawn of what we soon discovered were thorn trees. (Picture below!)

On Saturday, we did a kids' program for all the children at this home. Half of our group did sports (mainly football - or soccer, in American terms), and the other half of us did a craft. The craft we did was to have them decorate pictures frames. Angela, one of the teachers here, brought along her camera, laptop, and printer, and we took pictures of them to print out right there and put into their frames. We thought it would be a cool idea. Little did we know just how touching it would turn out to be. The people living in this facility have no homes, little clothing, only the food that is provided for them there, and very little earthly belongings. And for most of them, they have no pictures of themselves or their families and children. When they heard that we were taking pictures and giving them out right then, they all started showing up in their best clothes they owned. They were so proud to have their pictures taken! They started showing up with their families and asking for family pictures. Even the cooks, a couple of older ladies, asked if we could take their pictures. As Angela was uploading and printing out the pictures they were hovered around her anxiously. They were so thankful to have pictures of themselves and their families, probably some of the only ones they will ever have. Watching this, I was reminded again of how easy it is to take the little things for granted...something like a picture of yourself or your loved ones.

I think that most of us left there that weekend feeling humbled and grateful for such a wonderful experience.

Finding Comfort

From Melissa:
Strange things happen when you enter a foreign world, a world where the language and the customs and the people are all different from what you know. I find myself constantly wanting to settle...searching for things that bring comfort. This is not a new feeling for me. I lived in San Diego for 6 years, and yet each day I found myself searching for something more...searching for that feeling of "home". It always seemed elusive to me. And now I am in a new country, but still searching for the same things. There are things that bring me a sense of comfort, that feeling of home. Some of those things are: the seasons of fall and winter (when it seems that holiday warmth and togetherness is all around), holiday decorations (I get ridiculously excited when I see cute autumn and Christmas decorations!), cool and crisp fall air, watching episodes of Friends (no matter how many times I have seen them! I just love the friendship and camraderie...they are so happy together!), playing games and having coffee and dessert with family and friends. As I write these things, I see a common theme. Togetherness. Community. That feeling of knowing and being known. Something that I feel I have been missing for the last couple of years.

I have let myself become isolated (blaming it on the fact that I am an introvert and I need that time). I have let the sadness and anxiety that I struggle with take over my heart. And all the time I have kept everyone I love at arm's length. But I have also found that maybe in those times that I am struggling and seeking comfort in a feeling of "home", I should be seeking comfort in God instead. A good friend said to me, "why is it that in those times of greatest need, we drift from the one thing we really need?" I don't know, but I am going to work on coming to God instead. He is the only real answer. He is the only one who can really comfort me.

So I know this isn't such a lighthearted post, but I felt that true authenticity and opening myself up has to start somewhere (so why not with everyone I know??) When you are seeking comfort, seeking home, trying to settle, maybe what your heart is really looking for is something different....something more divine.

All the Details...

I have had many people ask me for more details...about the people and the culture and the daily ins and outs of what it is like here. So I thought this blog could be dedicated to that! For the most part, Hungary is a very homogenous country. The school is not! But the country as a whole is. People here tend to be friendly. When we go to pay rent to the landlord (who speaks NO English) she makes us food and sits with us and talks with us, even though neither of us can understand each other! The style here really ranges; I would say it is not that different from the U.S. The only American clothing store they have here is H&M, which I have not been into yet.

As far as groceries, there are a couple of big grocery stores which are British and French. There are also a few smaller stores, one here in Diosd is called CBA and we go there a lot because it is within walking distance. They also tend to carry some American brands (I actually bought Trader Joes cereal there the other day! In english and everything!) You can get most foods here too; they don't have chocolate chips, and the peanut butter here isn't very good (and if you know me very well then you know that that is rough for me!) Food is cheaper here than in the states (CA at least), but there are a few things that are more expensive (ice cream).

There are still remnants of communism here. Though they have free elections, many communists are still in power. The tax system here is the 4th highest in the world, with a 25% sales tax, which makes it very hard for most Hungarians to make ends meet. However, many of them have beautiful gardens and nice properties which they take good care of.

We feel really comfortable here. The Hungarians are not overly friendly, but they are polite and helpful. The city of Budapest has about 2 million people, but it never feels congested or overly crowded to us. There is so much to see and the architecture is beautiful! We feel blessed to be in such a beautiful place. Wish you all could come visit us! Just email or comment with any questions!

A funny moment...

So Sharon Martin (the elementary principal) introduces me in elementary chapel a couple weeks ago and as I make my way to the front of the room, and stand in front of all the kids, teachers and some parents, I hear a lot of ooo's and awww's and excitement because of how tall I am and how bright my shoes are, and so on. Sharon then introduces me and asks the kids..."what's the first thing you notice about Mr. Wilcox?"...a few kids go with the standard..."He's really tall!" and "His shirt matches his shoes!" But than she calls on this 4th grade boy who says..."well he has a lot of flab on his arm bones!" Hahaha, the whole room was cracking up, it was pretty dang funny and has been a big joke here ever since. The good news is I have the little man in my class, and on the first day I had to flex for him to prove myself...than I punched him as hard as I could to show him how strong I am and that seemed to work pretty well!! (just kidding about the punching)

Anyway, so my basic day here is 8:30 PE with 4th or 5th grade, Then lunch with the middle school where we usually eat for about 15 minutes and then play basketball or something in the gym. Then after lunch it's 2nd and 3rd grade PE followed by 1st grade PE and wrapping up the day with middle school boys PE. The kids here all want to play either dodge ball, bball, soccer or kick ball for some of the younger ones, and we also do a little working out before games and stretching. It has been pretty awesome, and since I can dunk it seems that I have been pretty much idolized by all the kids. I also try to play in every game we play which is a little unfair at times but it makes me feel like a champion!

Well we miss everyone back home and would love to hear from all of you! Don't hesitate to facebook, or email us, or even comment on our blog! Viszlat!!!

School Begins!

On a little more serious note, and to the reason that we are really here, school began last Wednesday, Aug. 26! The first three days consisted of us getting to know the students and how things work around the school. This Monday began our first full week of school and the start of a little more work!

Brandon began all his P.E. classes this week. He has all of elementary P.E. as well as middle school boys P.E. He is great with the kids and they just love him! They hang on everything he says and does...I am going to be just Mr. Wilcox's wife soon! He works them hard too...they don't get away with anything during his class! When basketball season comes he is also going to help coach the varsity basketball team, which he is really excited about! Everyone is really thankful that Brandon is here because they have many more women staff than men, and they have really emphasized the need for male role models at school.

I (Melissa) still have not begun counseling students yet, as it is just the fifth day of school, and not all the students know me very well yet. However, I am putting together a lesson for each month of school that I am going to be teaching in each classroom. Each month will be a new topic and I will go into the classrooms for 20-30 minutes and discuss the topic with the students. So far I only have elementary school planned and these are the topics we are going to discuss: differences, conflict resolution/bullying, self-esteem, healthy living, happiness and playing, being a good friend, and handling emotions/anger management. I will also be meeting with all the new students in the next couple of weeks to talk to them about how they are adjusting. Something I was not planning on, but am now doing, is helping to coach the varsity volleyball team! I am getting more excited about it now, but the thought made me a little nervous at first! It has been a long time!

We are both really excited for what God has planned for us this school year. We feel like we were called here for a reason and we ask that you would continue to pray as we embark on all that he has called us to do.

We miss you all back home! Come and see us if you can!! :)

Red Bull Air Races!

On Aug. 20, it is St. Istvan's (Steven) Day in Hungary (which is like our Fourth of July). Every year they host the Red Bull Air Races in Budapest on this day. We rallied downtown to see them and it was awesome! The planes cruise right under the main bridge and the course is set up in front of the parliament building which is about as good a backdrop as anything I have ever seen! We went from the sides of the Danube River up castle hill which is pretty amazing as well. We just walked around and also watched some more of the races from up there. The Hungarians sure as heck know how to have a holiday....in between the planes racing they had the blue angels put on a huge show some big military planes fly over and tons of music and fun all day until about 9p.m. when they had a massive fireworks show! Anyways, it has been a lot of fun having some time to explore before school starts which will be Wednesday the 26th. The beginning of next week is staff orientation and than we get started with what we came here to do!!! We will keep updating and am also in the process of putting more pics and videos on youtube and you can go to Flickr now and see some more as well....http://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonwilcox

Talk to you all again soon!

First Trip to Downtown Budapest

Hello all! We made our first trip to downtown Budapest the first Saturday that we were here, Aug. 15. Our family friend, Brad Baker and his daughter Olivia, took us around. We explored the east side of the river, which is the Pest side of Budapest. We got to see Hero's Square, the Basilica church, and Vacy Utca which is their main walking/shopping street. Here are a few pictures of our day!

Thank you all so much for those of you who have supported us (financially and spiritually). We are getting closer to our monthly needs. Right now we still need about $600 a month. We are praying that God will provide.

We are getting really excited about heading over there! We will keep you all updated with pictures and new blogs!!

Update!

We wanted to give you all an update on our trip to Hungary. It's going to happen...and soon! We are planning on leaving in less than a month (around August 10). When we arrive in Budapest, we will attend a new staff orientation for a week and then school will start the week after that. We are both very excited to get there and meet all of the students and the staff that we will be working with.

The school staff helped us find an apartment that is right across the street from the school. They have been using it for over 7 years, they have a great relationship with the landlords, and they are able to get it for guest teachers like us at a reduced rate.

With the lower rent and some other reduced costs, we were able to cut the amount of money we need to raise almost in half! At this point in our fundraising we have raised enough monthly support to cover our rent and utilities to live in Budapest. That a big piece of the puzzle now in place. Here's a rough breakdown of what we still need to raise per month:

Food: $350
Transportation: $200
Insurance: $250
Total: $800
We appreciate all the support and prayers that you have sent our way so far, and we are continuing to pray and trust that God will provide the rest through His people. If you want to make a dent in the $800 we still need to raise, you can either:

1. Request a pledge card from us
2. Sign up for direct giving via credit card or direct debit from your checking account at the link on the left

And please join us in praying...
- That God would provide the balance of funds we need to raise
- That our hearts and minds would be prepared to lead and love the students well
- That God would prepare the students to lean into all God wants to do in their lives this year
For those of you in Bellingham and Orange County, we are going to be having dessert receptions in the coming month to be able to see everyone before we leave and give you a chance to hear more about what we will be doing in Budapest. We look forward to spending more one-on-one time with all of you before we leave!
